Elson M. Haas, MD

Integrated Medicine Practitioner, Nutrition & Detoxification

Overview

Elson Haas, MD is one of the nation's leading practitioners of integrative medicine. Over the last two decades, Dr. Haas has integrated several natural and traditional healing disciplines into his family medical practice. He is the author of seven books, including the NEW Staying Healthy with the Nutrition (2006), The New Detox Diet (2004), his classic Staying Healthy with the Seasons (1981, 2003) and The False Fat Diet (2000), which is about food allergies and reactions and their association to body swelling, increased weight, and overall health.

Dr. Haas graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1972 and received advanced training in the natural health field, including Nutrition, Herbology, Oriental Medicine, Exercise Physiology, Body Therapies, and Mind-Body Medicine. Dr. Haas travels and teaches nationally and appears regularly on radio and television shows. He is also a professional consultant for a number of health writers and magazines.

Practice

Dr. Haas is the founder and director of the Preventive Medical Center of Marin (PMCM), an integrated health care facility in San Rafael. He has practiced medicine for more than 30 years and was one of the practitioners considered instrumental in developing the idea of "integrated medicine," which provides a multi-disciplinary approach to health care. This approach emphasizes patient empowerment and education; two-way communications between patient and provider to customize health treatments and select among options; and employ a combination of allopathic and natural medicine solutions. PMCM's office features a range of healthcare professionals with expertise in the following natural health areas:
  • Family and nutritional medicine
  • Detoxification
  • Individualized health programs
  • Structural care/body work
  • Women's health
  • Natural hormone balancing

Expertise

  • Dr. Haas' integrated approach to health care empowers patients to:
  • Develop strong relationships with healthcare practitioners,
  • Integrate Western medicine with natural healing methods,
  • Assist patients in transforming to healthier lifestyles, and
  • Implement powerful preventive medicine strategies to optimize their wellness.

Philosophy

"Lifestyle first, natural therapies next, and drugs last" is one of Dr. Hass' basic practice philosophies. Also, he believes that our body and how we look and feel, is a result of our life. Thus, if we want a different result, such as weight loss, less headaches or allergies, better digestion, more energy, better sleep and a more balanced mood (who doesn't want these?), then something in our lifestyle likely needs to change to get these better health results.

To combat daily stress and environmental toxins, Dr. Haas helps patients achieve healthy lifestyles and maintain wellness through diet, body detoxification, vitamins and herbal supplements, exercise, stress management and behavioral modifications. Dr. Haas feels the key to maintaining metabolic balance is to maximize nutrition and eliminate toxins. Healing our bodies requires motivation from within to change unwanted habits. Core to changing habits and modifying behavior is to create a lifestyle plan that takes into account each patient's real world practicalities. These tools help patients take control of their lives and make the best decisions that will lead to optimal health.

Dr. Haas' overall understanding of symptoms and disease integrates both Western linear thinking and naturopathic approaches to health and illness. PMCM integrates a variety of approaches-General Medical Practice, Nutrition and Detoxification, Women's Health Care, and Osteopathic Medicine, as well as a sensible mix of conventional and traditional medicine-to heal the body and put people on the road to health.

Passion

Dr. Haas gains immense satisfaction from seeing his patients transform their lives with healthier lifestyles -- from what they eat to how they look at life -- to achieve maximum health. His approach is to help patients better understand what it takes to maintain health and prevent illness by cleansing, renewing and enriching their bodies. Dr. Haas offers guided detox groups several times a year in Marin and Sonoma counties and is working with Naturalpath.com on an online program that will be publicly accessible.
