Feng Shui Your Summer

Jul. 3, 2008 |

The warm weather has us spending lots of time outdoors—but you can improve your health by making changes inside your home, too! Phil Jannetta, author of the Feng Shui booklets Prospering Over the Seasons, shared his summertime tips:

Support circulation. “Summer is associated with fire-like energy,” says Jannetta, which highlights your heart and circulatory system. Encourage good circulation by de-cluttering hallways and ensuring entry ways are bright and open.

Avoid burnout. Our schedules get packed this time of year, leading to burnout. “But you can drain away some of summer’s intensity by adding something distinctly feminine in the southwest area of your home,” says Jannetta, such as delicate artwork or some flowers.

Enhance clarity. Summer’s bright daylight supports clear thinking, which can make you more productive. Bring more light to your clarity by cleaning windows (use equal parts vinegar and water) and replacing burnt-out light bulbs (with CFLs!).

Slimming down this summer? “Avoid the colors red, orange and purple in your kitchen since they encourage eating,” recommends Leigh Kubin, host of Feng Shui Your Way. Instead, decorate in blue or green. (But remember to eat all the colors in the rainbow!)

Summer Books

books.jpgSummer has finally arrived here in Seattle. And the abundance of daylight means more time for things like barbecues, lawn sports, cool drinks and, of course, great summer reads. To create the perfect Worldchanging summer reading list, full of smart, beach-worthy must-reads, we asked for a little help from our friends. Here's what some of them are reading:

Reviews from Jay Walljasper

I worry that summertime as a distinct season when "the living is easy" is slipping away from us. The deluge of things to get done doesn't seem to slacken in the hot weather anymore. We could blame air conditioning or the i inexorable spread of workaholism, but whatever the cause, this is not a sign of progress. The lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer-- as another old song goes-- is something worth preserving.

But as the temperature rises here in Minneapolis, I am still committed to "chilling" and whittling down the big stack of interesting-looking books on my bedside table.

California Gives EV Manufacturers Massive Tax Breaks For Green Wheels

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced massive tax breaks for the electric vehicle industry yesterday — and in the process convinced Tesla Motors to site a new facility for a sub $60K vehicle in California. According to the plan (approved last Wednesday), the new law exempts automakers from paying sales and use tax on manufacturing equipment used to build EVs. This is expected to save companies in the industry millions of dollars. From the press release,

“These vehicles can play a big part in helping California successfully implement its groundbreaking laws to fight climate change,” said State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who chairs CAEATFA. “By offering this financial incentive, our goal is to ensure zero-emission vehicles realize their full potential in our state. In the bargain, we believe the policy will bolster our emerging green economy, create good-paying jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. I’m very pleased the policy helped convince Tesla to build its high-performance electric cars in California.”

Tesla’s new car is slated for production in 2010 — right around the time that Chevrolet is planning on releasing their $30K Volt. Once again, kudos to California for pushing this industry forward.

7 tips for going green without spending any money at all

May. 26, 2008 |

vertical-garden.jpgI bet you’ve read dozens of articles telling you to switch to low energy light bulbs and to insulate your cavity walls if you want to save energy and be green. I know I have. And that’s all very well if you own your own home and have the money available to buy those CFL light bulbs. But what if you don’t? Are you doomed to live a life of excess and waste just because you can’t afford to go green? I think not. There are plenty of things that you can do that will curb your carbon emissions and save yourself some money to boot.

1. Food

Grow your own. This isn’t a short term solution to going green, but it’s a good way to cut your food bill and your food miles in one foul swoop. There’s no need to even go out and buy seeds. Save seeds from the fruit that you eat and look out for seeds and seedling being given away on Freecycle. If you don’t have a garden, you can grow herbs and salad leaves on your windowsill. The cut and come again varieties of salad and stir-fry leaves are especially economical. Or get really inventive with a vertical garden on a balcony or outside wall. (see photograph of vertical garden by Nicolas Boullosa) Work with what you have.

If you’re in the habit of eating ready-meals, you’re most likely paying over the odds per meal. If you cook from scratch in large batches and freeze meal-size portions you will be saving money, eating healthier food and reducing the amount of packaging that you throw away.

How biofuels are like drugs

Jun. 17, 2008 |

By Vinod Khosla

To my surprise, recently I found myself the subject of an editorial by the Wall Street Journal which characterized me as a strong advocate of subsidies for food-based ethanol, and as a recipient of "federal dole" who ought to "take a vow of embarrassed silence."

I have not advocated subsidies for food-based ethanol. In fact, I strongly believe any nascent technology that cannot exist without subsidies beyond an introductory period will not gain market penetration, and is not worth supporting.

I do look forward to the WSJ's complaints about oil's subsidy bonanza, from tax breaks for drilling, loopholes that allow royalty-free or below-market offshore oil leases, manufacturing tax breaks, as well as roughly $7 billion in subsidies in the wake of the Katrina disaster. At a recent WSJ Conference, 75 percent of the erudite audience "voted" (rightly) that oil was more highly subsidized than ethanol.

Were these not such serious matters, the WSJ editorial would be laughable. But there are serious issues at stake. Should we not look past our noses to the larger issues of dependence on oil? The alternative of biofuels raises serious questions deserving more depth than the entrenched, one sided views of the Wall Street Journal.

Healthy, Environmentally Sound Disposable Diapers?

I have always been a big fan of cloth diapers. When I got pregnant with twins, I ran out and bought wonderful organic cotton diapers and was so excited to try them. Then reality set in. Twins? Cloth diapers? Yee gads.

Then when my babies were born they were sick and needed lots of care. My husband and other family members wanted to help take care of them. “Cloth diapers!?!,” they yelled. “No way.”  Disposable diapers have been used since 1948 -- how bad can a few more be!  I was powerless to buck the anti-cloth movement and secretly thankful that at least this aspect of their care might be easy.  Thus began my slow descent into the world of ecological/health compromises.

Am I proud of my descent? No, but I'm not sure I could have handled (at least with the twins) the whole cloth diaper process.  Are there ways to make your use of disposable diapers a little more environmentally friendly and healthy? Yes! I diapered my twins, and their little sister who followed a few years later, with disposable diapers, trying to make some environmentally sound, healthy decisions in my choice of brands along the way.

Most "conventional" diapers contain superabsorbent gels and chemicals that have been linked to childhood asthma (from breathing the airborne emissions from them).  The chemicals used in them are absorbed by their sensitive skin and, once used, contaminate our landfills.  Our babies' carbon footprints are HUGE...

My son has several shirts that almost look like bleach has been spilled on them because the colour has bled. It appears around his neck, chest and accross the sholders but never under the arms. Could it be his perspiration is overly acidic? Is there any way to test and or treat this condition. Trish

Zero Emissions Vehicle -- Running on Compressed Air!

There is a new zero-emissions vehicle that runs on compressed air called the Air Car. It's made by a French company called MDI and was invested by the CEO and founder of MDI, Guy Negre. It will be introduced in France and India in late 2008. The company plans to offer different models over time, including 2, 4 and 6 cylinder engines at prices ranging from $4,800 to $12,900. The first model, OneCAT holds up to 5 passengers and can go up to 500 miles on the highway with just one fill-up and up to 68 miles per hour. With a 5 passenger capacity this is truly a family friendly vehicle! To fill the engine, you just plug the car in at home and a built-in compressor refills the tank in 4 hours. I know where my next car is coming from!

Five Habits to Jumpstart Healthy Eating

1. Snack

To lose weight in a healthy way, you have to eat less. So does that mean no more between meal snacks? Actually, you should be enjoying healthy snacks between meals to keep your metabolism going, keep your hunger at bay, and to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Choose snacks that are a mix of protein and carbohydrates, and aren’t high in sugar. Use portion control. It can be easy to over eat if you aren’t paying close attention to portions. You can practice better portion control by buying single serving packages or creating your own portions and storing them in plastic containers or plastic bags in the cupboard or refrigerator. Don’t be fooled by a label that reads “reduced fat” and assume you can eat all you want! Reduced fat doesn’t translate into less calories, so read labels carefully. You’ll have an easier time moderating if you don’t eat directly from the package or box. By preparing portions in advance, you’ll have healthy choices ready at snack time, and you’ll be less likely to over eat.

2. Go With the Grain

You reap wonderful health benefit when you include grains, vegetables, and fruits into your weight loss plan. They provide nutrients that can help reduce disease, and they are high in fiber and low in calories. Fiber helps you to feel full for longer periods of time and can help with your portion control.

3. Eat When You’re Hungry

Sometimes we eat when we’re bored or anxious, or for reasons other than hunger. Are you listening to your body? Are you eating when you’re hungry, or is it to comfort yourself?
